Curran Commitment to the Community

JJ Curran Crane recognizes the importance of community involvement. We have a long history of support in youth and collegiate athletics, as well as efforts within the Detroit area. In 2008, we committed to expanding this initiative, through volunteering, company contributions and employee giving. These efforts combine to support an important company value while impacting our local community in a positive way.

Lending a Helping Hand
On August 25th 2009, J.J. Curran volunteered to help out a family in need of a new roof in Detroit. J.J. Curran’s dispatcher Eric James was contacted earlier in the month by a social worker looking for help setting a tarp on top of a single-family home within the city limits. This three-story dwelling was in dire need of a method to keep rain water from entering the house, providing a dry place for the family to reside.

With the help of five volunteers (Damien Sczepaniak, Rick McComas, Steve Jordano, Norm Bush, John Ryznar) and the donation of two boom trucks we set out to lay tarps over the house in the effort to provide temporary relief from the elements. Working in tandem our crew hoisted up new tarps and materials to secure the tarp to the roof. Making things difficult was the overall condition of the roof and its inability to support any individual of our crew. All work was to be done while suspended above the roof working from man baskets. After four hours of laying the tarp, securing it to the roof and cutting vent holes our efforts paid off. Not a minute after completing the job it began to rain and continued to rain for the remainder of the week.

Career Day at Detroit Community High School
Detroit Community High School Career DayIn the effort to broaden the minds of high school seniors our vehicle maintenance supervisor, Damien Sczepaniak, spent “Career Day” with Detroit Community High School.  During the day he shared his own experiences as well as information about the crane industry and related careers.  Aiding his presentation was a slideshow of jobsites and different types of cranes in the JJ Curran fleet.  To heighten the level of excitement t-shirts, hats and pencils were thrown to the first student to answer trivia questions.  Overall this day proved to be very fun and interesting for everyone involved.

Tradition to Sponsor Youth Hockey Continuestrenton hockey logo
Company founder, JJ Curran, who loved the game of hockey, wanted a place where kids could learn and play organized games. In the early 60’s he teamed up with Gordie Howe to build Hockeyland in St. Clair Shores. Year after year, JJ Curran Crane continues to sponsor teams and tournaments around the greater Detroit Area. This year JJ Curran Crane is sponsoring the team of JJ Curran’s youngest grandson, Sean, a Bantam AA Travel Team out of Trenton. The sponsorship helped in the purchase of team clothing. In addition, a set of Red Wings tickets were donated and raffled off to use toward tournament entry fees. JJ Curran Crane is proud to support youth hockey and the traditions of our founder.
